Matrix Affordable Homes for the Disadvantaged — Guelph, Ontario
Special Needs

The result of a well-balanced site design, this 20 unit infill housing project was created in a response to a special housing need in Guelph.  Assimilated into an existing residential neighbourhood on Woolwich street, this stacked townhouse project provides a variety of unit sizes and layout for single women with varying family needs.  The emphasis, however, was on independent accommodation for single women as reflected in the predominance of one bedroom stacked units.  An existing home on the property was retained to provide a scope of visual continuity for the streetscape and a focal point for the project by incorporating a refurbished 3 bedroom flat and a community centre.  An integrated garden and children's play area link the built forms and outdoor spaces into a harmonious community space.

Shared entries provide passive security and opportunities for social interaction between occupants.
